Dance: Groups & Open Floor

  • Closing date for all group/choral applications Friday 21 November 2014
  • Successful Applicants will be notified before 12 December 2014
  • Each group is expected to undertake an additional exhibition performance on either our main stage, outside stages on the Eisteddfod field or at other local venues

 

C1. Traditional Folk Dance Group (Saturday 11 July 2015)

Groups of no more than 30 dancers, with a total number of 8 musicians and 2 flag-bearers are allowed in addition.

Groups should present a programme of folk dances representative of their cultural tradition and presented on stage in a traditional manner (verses stylized or inventive choreography). The presentation should focus on the dance tradition and not instrumental numbers or dramatics. Groups may choose how many dancers to include however, the total performance must be a maximum of 10 minutes. Traditional instrumental accompaniment must be live; pre-recorded music is not permitted.

Prizes: 1st: International Trophy and £800, 2nd: £400, 3rd: £200

 

C2. Choreographed/Stylized Folk Dance Group (Friday 10 July 2015)

Groups of no more than 30 dancers, with a total number of 8 musicians and 2 flag-bearers are allowed in addition.

Groups will present engaging and entertaining choreography based on their traditional folk dance. Innovation and originality (inventiveness) are encouraged. The total duration must be a maximum of 10 minutes. Traditional instrumental accompaniment must be live; pre-recorded music is not permitted.

Prizes: 1st: International Trophy and £800, 2nd: £400, 3rd: £200

 

C3. Open Floor (Thursday 9 July 2015)

Any number of dancers up to 30, solos, duets any combination of dancers is allowed with a total number of 8 musicians and 2 flag-bearers are allowed in addition.

Groups can present a programme of any dance form; traditional, modern, ballroom, street, tap, jazz etc. The presentation should focus on the entertainment and talent. Innovation and inventiveness are highly encouraged. Groups may choose how many dancers to include however, the total performance must be a maximum of 10 minutes. Instrumental accompaniment is a big plus but not limited. Pre-recorded music is allowed only for this category.

Prizes: 1st International Trophy and £800, 2nd £400, 3rd £200

C4. Children’s Folk Dance Group (Thursday 9 July 2015)

Groups will present a programme of folk dances representative of their cultural tradition. The presentation should focus on the dance tradition and not instrumental numbers or dramatics. Groups may choose how many dances to include however, the total performance must not exceed 10 minutes. There should be no more than 30 dancers, who must all be under the age of 16 (on the competition day). A total number of 8 musicians are allowed in addition, 2 flag bearers are also allowed. Traditional instrumental accompaniment must be live; pre-recorded music is not permitted. *A costume change is allowed at the discretion of the group. However, dancing must be continuous on stage.

Prizes: 1st International Trophy and £500, 2nd £250, 3rd £100

C5. Cultural Showcase (Wednesday 8 July 2015)

A maximum of 50 performers (any combination of dancers, singers or musicians). Groups should present a well-balanced spectacle of traditional music, song, and dance representing the cultural heritage of their country. Engage the audience. Creative costuming and staging should be important considerations. The total duration of the performance must be a maximum of 10 minutes. *A costume change is allowed at the discretion of the group. However, the entertainment should be continuous. The stage should never be empty.

Prizes: 1st International Trophy and £500, 2nd £250, 3rd £100

C6. Dancing in the Street (Friday 10 July 2015)

A 15-20 minute programme of dances; to be performed at informal outside areas or stages. There should be no more than 24 dancers and a maximum of 8 additional musicians; all of which should be 15 years of age and older (on the competition day). 2 Flag bearers are also allowed. Originality of presentation, variety of programme and overall artistic standard will be taken into account as well as the overall response of the audience. Engaging the audience is encouraged, and brief explanations describing the program are appropriate throughout the program if the group so desires. The watching public will be able to indicate their favourite group and this ’vote’ will be noted by the Eisteddfod adjudicator. Traditional instrumental accompaniment must be live; pre-recorded music is not permitted.

Prizes: 1st: International Trophy + £300, 2nd: £150, 3rd: £75

Each dance group is required to forward the following by 21 November 2014:

  • Completed application form
  • A recent recording (DVD – see application pages for full details)
  • A short history of the group and leader (English Text Max. 300 words)
  • Entry fee of £100 per group (Non-refundable)
  • A recent photograph in jpeg format
